Early Social Communication Features of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Kim Eun-Kyung

Abstract
This study investigated social communication profiles of autism spectrum disorders before 24 months of age. Three group of children were subjects: 9 children with autism spectrum disorder (at-risk), 9 children with developmental delays, and 28 children with typical development. For investigating social communication profiles, the CSBS DP(communication and symbolic behavior scales developmental profile) was used. Data was collected for each child when he/she was 18months, 24months, and 30months of age. Significant group differences were found between autism spectrum disorders and typical development on all predictors of CSBS DP. There were significant differences between autism spectrum disorders and developmental delays on social composite of CSBS DP, but no significant group differences on symbolic composite. Gaze shifts, shared positive affect, gaze/point following, act for social interaction, and act for joint attention were the strongest predictors of autism symptoms before 24months of age. Implications for developing early identification and understanding early social communication in ASD were discussed.
